The Dumas by Giovanni Paolo
Maggini, Brescia c.1600 -a
modern interpretation
As a viola maker Maggini is
without equal. Contrasting the
finesse of the Cremona school,
the Brescian instruments of
Gasparo da Salo and Maggini
are considered cruder in their
workmanship. Maggini, however,
sought his own style. Virtuoso
players demanding the forceful,
but romantically dark Brescian
sound seek after his instruments.
The viola was named after the
Dumas Brothers of Lyon, who
not only owned this Maggini,
but also another three violins
and one other viola.
