Cello by Amati, 1616 CI016
The Brothers Amati are considered to be
two of Cremonas finest makers. Their work
closely follows that of their father Andrea,
the founder of the Cremona school. Their
violins are typically femininely small while
their tenor and bass instruments are more
robust both in size and tone.
This cello is typical of the Brothers Amatis
work, although like all of their cellos it has
been reduced
in size.
The cello was owned by Stephen Jocelyn
(1960-2003), founder of The Sound Post Ltd.
Today the cello is held in Trust to be loaned
to promising young musicians.
